“Experience Marriage the Way It’s Meant to Be!”
In 2016, several pastors were meeting over coffee and biscuits at McDonald’s in Latta, South Carolina. They were discussing the state of marriages and the need for an affordable marriage retreat. The belief that surfaced in the discussion was that every marriage needs preventative maintenance if it’s going to thrive. Just like a car needs the oil changed and the tires rotated, our marriages need some attention from time to time.
In looking at various marriage retreats, the cost was prohibitive. Some retreats are charging $175 per person + hotel + meals. A couple could easily spend $700 + for a weekend. These pastors decided to charge only $129. per couple (not per person, if registered by Dec. 31, 2023. After Dec. 31, the cost goes up to $149 per couple), to pay for the guest speaker, hotel meeting space, retreat materials, and advertising. The hotel cost and meals are separate, however it’s not required that the couple stay at the host hotel to participate in the retreat. (But it is recommended as it’s a part of the ‘retreat’ experience.)
In 2017, the first “A Weekend of Encouragement” was held in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina with over 50 couples in attendance. Myrtle Beach is a wonderful place to visit, even in February. There are many restaurants and lots of activities available to the couples during their free time.
The next retreat is being held on February 15 – 16, 2024 at The DoubleTree Resort by Hilton in Myrtle Beach. Dr. Tim Coker, pastor and author, will be leading the retreat this year. Reservations at the The DoubleTree by Hilton can be made by calling 843.315.7100 and letting them know that you are a part of “A Weekend of Encouragement” marriage retreat, to get the discounted room rate.
All meals will be on your own with the exception of a continental breakfast on Saturday morning. The hotel also serves a full hot breakfast in their restaurant on the ocean and there are numerous restaurants within a mile of the hotel.
The retreat will begin on Friday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. and dismiss by 9 p.m. We’ll begin again on Saturday morning, Feb. 16, at 9 a.m. and break for lunch by 11:30 a.m. Our afternoon session will begin at 1:30 p.m. and we’ll dismiss by 3:30 p.m.
Saturday evening is designed with no programming in order for you and your spouse to have a ‘date night’. We will not have any programming on Sunday morning, Feb. 16, so feel free to return to your home church. If you choose to stay over, there are several churches in Myrtle Beach within a 5 mile radius of the hotel.
